| IN Sub-Sahara Africa, Which so far has benefited little from the green revolution. the adoption of high-yielding maize had great potential for closing the gap between food demand and supply. To bring about this transformation, fertilizer is essential for realizing the yield potential of hybrid maize while sustaining the fertility of Africa's fragile land. This study of Eastern Province, Zambia, shows that use of fertilizer on traditional varieties can also be a catalyst for agricultural growth. | Modernization of traditional agriculture entalls increased participation of the smallholder sector in the exchange economy. The achievement of this participation requires an open trade regime, domestic policies that ensure against market failures and public policy that effectively permits use of a new production technology for sustained growth. | Research has shown that gainful participation in livestock markets is an important means of reducing poverty in developing countries, particularly for rural and periurban households. The rapid growth in demand for meat and milk, along with the corresponding expansion of livestock markets to connect consumers and suppliers, presents real opportunities for smallholders to generate income by raising livestock.
